One of my favorite passages from Zora Neale Hurston is, "Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place." I think this resonates particularly true to Kendra Ross because I can feel love in every note on her debut release, New Voice. Ironically, Kendra does not have a new voice at all, or should I say, "ain't nuthin' new about Kendra's voice" (I had to do it). Vocally, I hear soulful cues from the likes of Shirley Brown, Ruth Pointer, and even the great Phyllis Hyman. I did however, find Kendra's spin on life, love and the human condition refreshing in a way that I had not expected from a freshman release. I was even more astonished to find that the person lived up to the music that I had become so fond of.
Like her greatest influences Kathern Dunham and Zora Neale Hurston, Kendra has paved a way for herself where none yet existed. A renaissance woman in her own right, she has managed to balance her spirituality, education, corporate aspirations and an astounding knack for penning lyrics that seem to penetrate to the core of your emotion. Clearly Kendra is too much to for anthropology, too much for the music industry and way too much for the corporate rat race. While these external demands do exist in her life, she has managed to channel all of them into music that took my breath away.
A few years ago i released my 1st LP: 'KraK attacK', toured the world with Saul Williams and Nine Inch Nails - also co-producing and releasing an album with them,
and last year i co-produced the song "Whatever U Want" with Kanye West and John Legend. (all on my Myspace page- link below)
... This year, i'm very excited to announce 2 new singles and a forthcoming LP on Stones Throw Records , and ................ . . . . . . .... . .....
a new release and European tour with the legendary hardcore/political band Atari Teenage Riot, of which i am now a member of, taking over vocal duties - kind of filling in for the late M.C. Carl Crack. An mp3 our new song "Activate" is attached to this email, and i have 2 verses on this record, which will be released May 17th.
* check out this new article just posted today on URB.com - which goes into the story of how i hooked up with ATR :
* * * * I will also be appearing on the tv show "Food Party" on IFC Network in May, where i play 'The King Of The Universe' on the 4th episode of the new season "The Emperor's New Dinner" which i think airs the second tuesday in May - May 4th on IFC. I had the time of my life playing this role, and the show is crazy.
